CHAPTER EIGHT

UNDER a blanket of stars, and with a procession of guests and musicians accompanying them behind, they were carried aloft on a litter along the pathway to Tajik’s quarters. Every bump and jostle escalated the already heady friction between them. The fabric between them meant nothing. Morgan knew she could be wearing full body armour and still she would be able to feel this man’s heat, feel his want seeping through to her.

Torches lit the surrounds of the building, set at the top of a rise. Below them she could see similar torches, lighting the paths and buildings like fireflies. And beyond them was darkness lit only by the glowing moon and the blanket of stars above, as the desert and the night sky merged into one.

The carriers lowered their burden to the ground and Taj stepped off, taking her hand and leading her past two guards through ornately panelled doors into the interior. Cheers and song erupted from outside as the procession turned and headed back to the palace to continue the celebrations.

Morgan walked across the room, clutching her arms around her while Tajik closed the doors behind them and dimmed the lighting. She glanced around, trying to appreciate the magnificence of the space, with its light-coloured walls festooned with colourful Persian carpets echoing those covering the floor, its wide coffee tables laden with fruit, deep sofas with tasselled cushions and a central pole from which was suspended a canopy of fabric for a ceiling.

She’d barely registered it all when she jumped, feeling his hands on her shoulders, his face dipping close to her ear. ‘So much more civilised than a tent, wouldn’t you say?’

‘It’s beautiful,’ she agreed, trying to calm her racing heart, wishing she weren’t quite so jumpy, but wondering how, under the circumstances, she had any choice.

‘Like you,’ he said, turning her around in his arms, holding her there while his eyes drank her in. ‘Beautiful. A vision in gold. Simply magnificent.’

She could barely breathe as he studied her face, his eyes intense, his mouth set. His fingers coaxed her chin higher, his touch triggering wave after wave of sensation spiralling deep down below.

‘So beautiful,’ he uttered on a breath, and his lips dipped lower, meeting hers in one sweet joining.

Part of her melted then and there, as his lips moved over hers in a sensual dance that transformed trepidation into anticipation. Her body, so keenly kept on tenterhooks tonight, hummed into life, even though he had barely touched her.

He broke the kiss and she looked up at him, knowing she was flushed and her breathing was already unsteady, knowing that he would take it as some kind of victory. But it didn’t matter. Because his breathing was already ragged too, his nostrils flaring while the embers in his eyes sizzled and flared. And that gave her a sense of victory—that she could provoke such a reaction in such a powerful man.

Was it merely lust? Or did he feel something for her, his sheikha? Although
